nce the cornerstone of the New England economy, regional seafood production has declined so dramatically in recent years that some wonder whether there will be a fishing industry in New England ten years in the future. The northeast US is not alone in its fisheries woes, as ocean fisheries are in dire straits throughout the world. The management of regional and global capture fisheries needs new approaches. Across the globe, the majority of fish stocks are considered fully exploited and scientists agree that capture fisheries production will not increase on par with increases in demand from a growing human population. Long-term solutions to the New England fisheries crisis must be multi-faceted, must address the diverse and interactive components of the problem, and they must include consideration of the ecosystem as opposed to single species management.
