Fisheries:
Once the cornerstone of the New England economy, regional seafood
production has declined so dramatically in recent years that some
wonder whether there will be a fishing industry in New England ten
years in the future. The northeast US is not alone in its fisheries
woes, as ocean fisheries are in dire straits throughout the world.
The management of regional and global capture fisheries needs new
approaches. Across the globe, the majority of fish stocks are considered
fully exploited and scientists agree that capture fisheries production
will not increase on par with increases in demand from a growing
human population. Long-term solutions to the New England fisheries
crisis must be multi-faceted, must address the diverse and interactive
components of the problem, and they must include consideration of
the ecosystem as opposed to single species management.
CINEMAR is addressing capture fisheries issues on several fronts.
